Child Labor is only a SymptomApril 29th, 2010
"The problem of child labor, which is something that everyone cares about, is only a symptom – the real problem is lack of just jobs for adults."
- Heather Grady, 23 April 2010 Heather Grady, Managing Director of Realizing Rights, spoke on the panel "Just Jobs: Building Institutions for Development" at the Center for American Progress (CAP) on April 23rd. She stressed that strengthening opportunities for decent work – which CAP and others call the ‘just jobs and social protection’ agenda – is an essential but often overlooked target within the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). To reach the MDG 1 goal of halving extreme poverty and hunger, we must help countries create not only more jobs but better jobs. This means supporting government ministries, increasing social dialogue between workers and employers, and helping those working in the informal economy - such as street vendors and farmers - to be heard by decision-makers in governments and the private sector. Realizing Rights views decent work, just jobs, and social protection as an accelerator for all of the Millennium Development Goals.
