First Alliance of Civilizations ForumMADRID | January 11th, 2008
On January 15-16, the first United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Forum will be held in Madrid, Spain. Hosted by the government of Spain, the forum will convene political leaders, grassroots and civil society leaders, media heads, corporate and film industry executives, and religious figures.
Mary Robinson, Queen Noor of Jordan, Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, Author Paulo Coelho and news anchor Riz Khan will be among the public figures attempting to find new ways to bridge the growing divide between nations and cultures worldwide, and to establish new partnerships to promote global understanding.
The Forum will be opened by the President of the Government of Spain, Jos? Luis Rodr?guez Zapatero, Prime Minister Erdo??an of Turkey, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and President Jorge Sampaio, High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations.
Created in 2005 at the initiative of Spain and Turkey and under UN auspices, the Alliance seeks to tackle fear and suspicion, bridge divides and overcome prejudices and polarizations between Islam and the West.
A number of high-profile initiatives will be announced at the Forum, including major projects aimed at promoting understanding among cultures in the areas of media and youth. These will include efforts by the ???Group of Friends??? network ??? a growing community of over 80 States and international organizations that support the objectives of the Alliance.
